The Chancery

The Chancery (1)

I've been attending quite a few events and dinners recently with various friends either because it was a more girly affair, or Dan was busy. He's been working extremely hard, but it's left little social time together. So being the social one in the couple, I put my foot down, and exclaimed that we needed some quality time together.

At the moment, Dan has so many work commitments and projects on he doesn't like to take a whole night off. So calling a truce, we headed down to The Chancery, as it is a round the corner from where we live. Time for me, and then still time for work afterwards. See, compromise can be easy- even if it meant we got there rather early.

The Chancery (10)

The Chancery is down a little side street right off the tube station, making it a little hidden gem, although it does sit beside 40 Chancery Lane, the new headquarters for Saatchi and Saatchi.

Just before Christmas, Graham Long joined as Head Chef, bringing modern European menus which he learned from working with Mark Sargeant and Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s. Yes, this may be a hidden little place, but it has big credentials.

Even front of house is orchestrated by restaurant manager, Sylvain Gergeaux, who is formerly from Gordon Ramsay’s Petrus as Head Sommelier.

You know when you get those goosebumps about a place? Well I was certainly getting this here.

The menu is seasonal so changes every few months which I think is fantastic as not only do you get great in season flavours, but it also means you can come back again and again.

Dan started with steak tartare with radish. According to him, it was fantastic. I'd take this as high praise as he's not one to reveal.

The Chancery (3)

Me however does reveal, and I was blown away with my starter. Visually and taste wise.

Pan seared foie gras, blood orange, sherry jelly, sunflower seeds, brown bread and bitter leaves.

Now I know not everyone likes the idea of foie gras, but I love it, and this certainly was one of the best I've had. I wasn't sure if all those flavours would be too much, but not at all.

You could tell each had been carefully selected as they worked.

We then had a little appetizer. Apparently clean fish, helps refresh the palate.

Torchon of wild halibut, laverbread crust, nasturtium, spiced cockles and roasted cauliflower.

I'm not the biggest fish fan, but even I lapped up every mouthful.

The Chancery (8)

Main's was a meaty affair for both. Dan opted for Crisp suckling pig belly, dried figs, Bellota ham, mead, kohlrabi and sprout tops.

It looked wondrous and again I was told it was 'great'. A well chosen word.

The Chancery (9)

I went for something a little different. Now before I say what it was just reserve judgement,

Ash crusted loin of venison, crapaudine beetroot, dates, walnuts and dried goats cheese.

Yes, ash crusted. I actually asked the waiter what it was like as I was very skeptical. However the whole dish is just incredible. The venison is cooked so well, I could have eaten a whole deer of it- sorry.

The ash is almost like that charcoaled barbecued taste. Like when you cook steak on the barbie in summer. Yes, it's like a taste of summer on a plate.

By the end of the meal, we couldn't really think if dessert, but the sound of the white chocolate sponge cake, fresh passion fruit and toasted meringue caught Dan's eye. He has a thing for fresh flavours. Anything fresh, fruity and clean tasting.

Well this checked all the boxes and really was so light and zingy.

Now I never normally have a Liqueur coffee but for some reason I just really really fancied one. I'd really recommend a Tia Maria coffee. Tia Maria is the one alcoholic drink my mum will have, so it was also my first alcoholic drink.

You can see that we are quite different when it comes to drinks mentality.

The Chancery is is such a hidden gem in Central London. The food is just sensational and the staff couldn't be more friendly.

So next time you need a little date night, try Chancery Lane.
