I truly admire people who have a creative talent. To create something that makes someone else gasp and admire is an amazing gift.
I've always been a big supporter of local and homegrown food produce as I understand that it is someones business and I'd rather give my money to Jane down at her local shop than Big Bob head of some huge supermarket chain.
But homegrown fashion? I will admit, my normal shopping habits lie in chain stores, but last year I went to Graduate Fashion Week and was blown away with the talent. Someone actually handmade these garments. Since then I recently got talking to one of the designers who took part, Katrina Wilson and once again was amazed at her incredible gift.
Katrina Wilson is a Womenswear Designer who graduated with a First Class Honours in Fashion Design at Birmingham City University.
She took part in Graduate Fashion Week and because she wowed everyone so much, she won at the award ceremony, a scholarship to study MA Fashion Design Technology Womenswear at London College of Fashion.
This jacket is one of her pieces that won her that scholarship.
I wish I could show you in person the jacket as the craftsmanship is unbelievable. The design, detail, the way it feels, is luxurious, elegant and of course, completely handmade.
I simply love everything about the cropped tux design. As you can see I styled it quite simply as I wanted the design to speak for itself, but you can dress it up or down as much as you like. I think it would also look gorgeous with a pretty white dress.
I urge you to check out her designs as they really are fantastic, and I know now I'll be supporting independent designers much more. Why don't you make May the month you buy one thing from someone independent? I'm with you on this one.
