Beauty and the Beast Afternoon Tea | Town House at the Kensington Hotel

Friday 24 August 2018

Who didn't grow up surrounded by Disney as a child? I remember every Saturday we would go to the library and could rent a video (the free alternative to BlockBuster) and I'd work my way through the Disney collection. Whilst Mulan is still my ultimate favourite Disney Princess (she's so kick-ass), Belle will always hold a special place in my heart. Beauty and the Beast is one of the great classic's, with a beautiful love story, special and fun characters and a fight against evil. Plus the original animated film came out the year I was born.

So upon hearing that there was a Beauty and the Beast afternoon tea in London called 'A Tale As Old As Time' I think I did a little squeal and probably London did a collective one as well.

Town House at the Kensington host the extremely popular afternoon tea. As soon as new dates appear, they often get snapped up, so I couldn't believe when I was invited  to come try it. It's a Disney miracle!

The afternoon tea is true to the story and not just with the amazing characters you get on each table.

"Be our guestBeef ragout
Cheese souffle
Pie and pudding "en flambe"
We'll prepare and serve with flair"

So you can guess what the first course is.

The afternoon tea consists of traditional sandwiches (it wouldn't be afternoon tea without them and I don't think their was any source material in Beauty and the Beast about sandwiches). These come with smoked salmon and crème fraîche, roast chicken with cranberry, cucumber and cream cheese and egg mayonnaise.

Then quite controversially, there is no scones. I know! I know! But whilst I too at first did a sharp gasp, there is good reason. Instead there are sweet brioche baguettes which is a nod to the opening song of the film, Little Town

‘Marie, the baguettes, hurry up!’

But fear not, these do come with spreadable chocolate, cream and jam and do make a delicious alternative actually.

Up top with the sweets, and this is where the afternoon tea really shines.

There is cute little Chip, with a hanging tag which says "try the grey stuff", which is a line from the song 'Be Our Guest'. This grey stuff is actually white chocolate and very good.

There is a vanilla and gold jelly pot which contains a rose petal inside which is a very cool nod to the enchanted rose in the cloche. Then there is a spiced snowball macaron made from chocolate and coconut which is a nod to Belle and the Beast’s snowball fight. I can't resist a macaron, even after all theses years.

But my ultimate favourite pastry is an amazing chocolate ganache Cogsworth. The detail is amazing and I felt so bad for smooshing his face, but it was really good. So good, I may have gotten another...

Finally there's also a cute speculoos yellow dress like the one Belle wears to the ball, to take home. I'm still kicking myself that I left mine on the table.

The afternoon tea is one of the cutest and most special ones I've been to in ages. A lot of afternoon teas fail to distinguish themselves from others, but not this one! Oh no! This will make you smile all day! Plus I saw many people dressing up for the occasion so go all out. There was the cutest table of little girls all in princess outfits who looked so cute!

The Tale As Old As Time afternoon tea is at Town House at the Kensington Hotel in South Kensington and is on every day until 30th November so I'd be quick as tables get snapped up often (although I spy some free dates!).
