The Graduate

Monday 22 July 2013
Friday 19th July, I became The Graduate

Graduation (2)
.
4 long and turbulent years had led to this day. A single moment, where I would walk across a stage in front of friends and family, to shake the hand of the chancellor and officially become Laura Hyatt BSc Hons.

I can honestly say I have never felt so proud. It has been a long road doing my degree, with moments of struggle, and moments of sheer pain like the run up to exams, and dissertation deadline. However I honestly feel like my life is on a high right now. I have a graduate job lined up in London staying in September and I’ll be moving out into the big bad world on my own- and I cannot wait!

It was a little sad that I couldn’t graduate with a lot of my friends, but my university is a collegiate system, and so you graduate with your college rather than course, however both friends and family were out in full force.

My parents were so sweet and bought me a mortar board Pandora Charm for my bracelet to commemorate the day. My bracelet it what I call my memory bracelet. It only has charms on it that represent something, like a trainer to represent completing the Great North Run, or my London Bus charm to signify my year living in London.

Of course we had to attempt the hat tossing. I wasn’t too good at this, let me tell you!

Throughout the day there was so many photo opportunities, I felt rather like a celebrity with the paparazzi.

Just to lower the tone of the day, my dad just had to try on my gown and board, insisting he was a PhD student! Talk about overshadowing my day! Huh!

The day ceremony itself is rather a short thing, a shake of a man’s hand and it’s done! However without going all deep, I did feel like this was it. The big moment of my life. I will never forget my time at university, and it is true what they say- it really is life changing. I couldn’t have been more proud of how far I have come on Friday. I wasn’t proud though that I needed an EXTRA LARGE mortar board hat! How big is my head?! I’ll just keep telling myself it’s to put my big brain in (!)
