Zumbura: A Night For Sharing

Friday 7 November 2014
Zumbura (2)

When you live with someone, many things change. You can’t just let your phone die on the way home and then decide to stop off for a drink or two, someone is going to worry why you haven’t made it home. You can’t slob around in your holey, greying pants with no makeup on- OK scratch that, after a while, you so re-start to do this.

But the one main thing is you have to learn to share. Share your space, share the washing up and most importantly, share food. You can’t get mad when someone uses the last of ‘your’ peanut butter, because well that someone is your someone, and that peanut butter is ‘our’ peanut butter now.

I realised a couple of days ago that me and Dan have sailed past the sixth month living together mark now. In fact it’s been just over 7 months we’ve shared a flat. While we obviously share our food, we have learnt that we are both not exactly cooking types. It’s not that we can’t cook, it’s just we… can’t be bothered? After both getting back from work at silly o’clock, we tend to like to eat picky bits. Hummus and falafel, salami and cheeses and lots of tear and share fresh bread slavered in butter.

So when we are not in eating picky, sharing bits, we are… out eating picky bits?

We headed to Zumbura for dinner over in Clapham, where Dan used to live before our place.

Zumbura specialise is home-style cooking from the Purab region of India. Everything is small plates, for sharing, passing around and getting stuck in. A dip of bread in this, mixed with a bit of that, it’s just like at home, except much better food.

OK, and better décor too.

I think I've learned the most is that men get grumpy when there hungry, I mean look at that face. That's the face of a man on a empty stomach.

Me on the other hand, I'm just happy and over excited at the thought of food arriving any second.

Which arrived promptly a few minutes later.

First up was chaat, yoghurt with crisp breads and tamarind sauce. These were amazing, completely moorish and addictive. Dan had to bat my hand away to let him have a look in. Not sharing mentality.

There was fresh salsa and dips.

Pakora's, fritters made of spinach and onion chick pea were spicy, crispy and gone within a minute.

We ordered a round of hari murghi which is chicken marinated in fresh herbs and yoghurt and then some shami kebab, soft flat lamb kebabs, twice cooked.

Being people who dip things, we ordered a couple of curries. A kofte made of beef meatballs stuffed with herbs in a rich velvety sauce and a murghi ka salan, a home-style chicken curry cooked on the bone. Dipping sauces at their best.

Zumbura (12)

And what goes with dippy sauces? Bread of course. Never having actually had Indian bread before, I didn't know what to expect. Well, it was only bloomin' amazing!

A mixture of chappati, poori, and paratha. So so good.

Zumbura (13)

Oh go on then, we do eat veg as well, I promise.

Once all the food was down on the table it was time to get stuck in.

Ready. Steady. GO!

Things tend to get messy when we share food. But who really cares when the food is really this good, and oh and the company isn't too bad either.

Zumbura really did exceed all our expectations, its a small, intimate restaurant, yet with such flavours. I really really recommend.

And look what I caught on camera! A post dinner, happy boyfriend. I think we really work, sharing together eh?

  1. I love a really good Indian and although there are soooooo many Indians in London there's not lots of good ones. The best I've been to is Trishna in Marylebone.
    Lots of love,

  3. I love picky bit restaurants! Especially because if you go out to eat with my mom, you are forced to share whether you like it or not so I'm a very well trained food sharer x
