Staying At Jetwing Kaduruketha And A Look At The Surrounding Areas

Sunday 4 September 2016
Jetwing Kaduruketha, Sri Lanka Hotel

After my abseiling adventure I was looking to crash out for the night. Whilst it may have taken 5 hours in a van to get to somewhere to crash, I have to say I think it was worth it. We arrived at Jetwing Kaduruketha in the dead of night, but boy did it look amazing all lit up.

In the heart of what can only be described as the jungle, the hotel is made up of one main, but small building, where food is served, a pool, and then each of the individual cabins for guests. Walking in the dark to mine was an experience. All around you could hear the crickets chirp so loud, and potentially other animal sounds too.

Now I have to say, my first night was not so fun. No fault of the hotels as such, more my lack of Asian experience. I realised I had only ever stayed in City hotels really when I had travelled, so of course, I got a huge shock when a frog hopped across my bathroom! I screamed and ran for the cover of my mosquito net. Then to my horror, there were Geckos on the walls and ceiling. So for that first night I was terrified. But what I hadn't thought about was that I was in the middle of the jungle, in a wooden hut. Once I got someone to take out the frog, it was actually really not that bad.

The next morning though, I really got to see the beauty of the place. This was my lodge, complete with bike, if I fancied wizzing past those frogs!

But the real treat is when you order breakfast. Because this is the view you get...

And you eat it there ^ Not bad eh?

After breakfast, we went for a little wander in the grounds of Jetwing Kaduruketha. The place is gorgeous, completely nestled among nature. It is actually sat among acres of rice paddy fields, as the hotel runs on a scheme where the local farmers own half the hotel so get a profit share.

Now I'm not saying I could be a rice farmer at all, but the views from the office are pretty sweet.

After lunch we headed out with out butler Uranda to a place called Mini Worlds End. Now quick point, at first I felt a little uncomfortable with the idea of a butler. I don't know, I just imagined a sort of slave labour, but infact being a butler in a luxury hotel in Sri Lanka is actually considered a huge honour.

Also as I'd never been in a Tuk Tuk before, the hotel let me borrow theirs for a little trip. So obviously had to film it.

We started our hike up the top of Mini Worlds End all peaceful and calm.

The scenery is something to behold on the walk up, as it gives you a taste of life outside the big cities.

Stunning, although none of us were quite prepared for the steep steep climb up to the top of the (small) mountain. Under the baking early afternoon soon, it was torture.

But the views at the top of Mini Worlds End were totally worth it.

Mini Worlds End is just a place you come to sit, look and I guess you could say reflect. A huge deep valley is in front of you, covered in trees, with just a smattering of houses. It's really a sight.

On the way back down, again under the baking sun, we grabbed a fresh coconut and papaya juice which cost about £1 and it was the best £1 I've ever spent. Plus I feel like it goes to a really good place.

The next day we decided to go and see the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge as it's one of the most famous bridges in Sri Lanka and also a good viewing point. From the hotel its about a 30 minute drive, which may sound a little far out, but remember the hotel is quite isolated.

One thing I wasn't aware before I went was that it is actually still a working railway! Although to get to the bridge you have to walk on the track... you can tell we aren't in England and it's health and safety conscious state. Just remember to look up the train times before you go.

Like I said, it's an amazing viewing point, and really gives you a sense of what Sri Lanka is about.

After 2 days at Jetwing Kaduruketha it was time to move on to our next adventure, but I hope that has given you a taste of the amazing area, and got you wander lusting after Sri Lanka.
