Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards

Tuesday 8 November 2016

I’ve been blogging now for nearly 4 years (November 14th is my blog birthday) . That’s a pretty long time in the world of blogging it would seem. I remember when I started. I was at university, sat on my bed, not really enjoying my time, and I felt like I had a few things I wanted to say. I’ll be honest, when I started my blog, I actually wanted to write an opinion based blog. Talk about issues and topical points. In fact one of my first pieces I wrote (which has since been deleted) was about how I found women often shame those who are less sexually knowledgeable (yup- imagine if my blog had gone down that route! Wow!)

Back then there was no brand collaborations, or PR’s emailing you. In fact I went a whole year without a single PR emailing me. I just wrote for me really. I never could imagine where my blog would take me, and I certainly could never imagine being nominated for Best Lifestyle Influencer at the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards. Yes, that’s right; Cosmopolitan Magazine knows my blog exists (and thinks its rather good). To me, that’s a pinch me moment.

Last week, Cosmopolitan had their influencer award ceremony at The Orangery at Kensington Palace.  Bloggers from all over the country came down.  There was bloggers from beauty, travel, fitness- it made for the best game of spot your favourite blogger.

Outfit Details
Dress: V by Very
Heels: Asos

The invite stated glam, but well, I didn't need to be told twice. I love an opportunity to dress up. I found this gorgeous cobalt blue dress from Very which I just adore. I love the subtle ruffle detail and the fact that it is fitted without being restrictive. Being a redhead, something colours clash a bit, but turns out blue is the perfect colour for us gingers. It just goes so well.  I'm also a huge fan of long sleeve going out dresses; legs or cleavage is the old mantra, and in this case I chose legs.

The Orangery is an incredible space. In the day it is a restaurant, and from the looks of things, a very fancy one indeed. After bumping into a few people I knew, and saying hi to some of my favourite bloggers, I found my friends Twins That Travel. I speak regularly with both Claire and Laura, but haven’t actually seen them in ages. Our friendship is funny really, as the twins pointed out. We first met… gosh… 2 years ago I think, at my first ever travel blogging event. We spent all day in a hotel basement tweeting. After that, later that year I found myself homeless for a short amount of time and I stayed on Laura’s couch for a week. Then in January just gone, Claire and me trekked across the Arctic for charity. As you do.

The evening was a great chance to do a bit of people watching. I love seeing what everyone else is wearing. A big shout out to these two ladies in this photo for their hot pink and velvety pant suit combos. Yes girls!

Blossom Hill sponsored this years awards, which up until last week, I'm not sure if I've ever really has Blossom Hill. See, I actually don't drink at home, so it's rare that I buy wine, however I did like the Spritz option they are doing. It makes for a much lighter and easy drink.

You really can't take me anywhere...

Soon it was time for the awards themselves. This year they had changed it up a little. Last year it was the Cosmopolitan Blog Awards, where as this year they had rebranded to Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards, as the blogging world is evolving, and now social media such as Instagram has a huge following and as the title suggest, influence. So a "bloggers" overall presence was taken into account this year. Which is even crazier to think I was nominated for Best Lifestyle Influencer!

The awards were quite nerve wracking- it had come down to this one moment where one name would be read out in front of all these people. You could most definitely feel the tension in the room. I honestly had that tight chest feeling, and most definitely had sweaty hands.

Sadly, I did not win. But, to be honest, that would have just been the icing on the cake. To be nominated was an amazing achievement. Apparently there was 10,000 nominees entered and so to make it down to the final 5 lifestyle influencers is unbelievable. i still find it crazy that people read my blog!

Gabriella from PrettyUgly.co.uk won best lifestyle influencer and very well deserved, so go check her out.

After the awards were over, we could all relax a bit. It 100% didn't matter that I hadn't won, as like I said, I still pinch myself at where I am with me blog and what I have achieved.

I don't have rich parents, I have a full time job, I don't own a designer wardrobe worth £1000s, and to be honest half the time I do the most stupid of things (I spent a good half an hour with my pants on back to front the other morning) so what I'm trying to say is, that if I can do it, anyone can. There are no rules, there are no entry requirements. Just work hard, have passion and dedication and you can achieve anything. x

  1. Nothing wrong with wearing pants back to front ;-) I LOVED this post and very well done for being one of the top influences!
Thanks for sharing and showing support and encouragement to all of us who own a little piece of internet and still have a long way to go.

  7. Congratulations Laura, that's a great achievement! I was nominated for the Cosmopolitan blog awards twice back in 2012 & 2013 and I was so chuffed to attend the party with other bloggers. The Orangery is a magical place and you look gorgeous!
