How To Turn A Bad Morning Into A Good Day

Friday 27 January 2017

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my future. Last year I hit 25, and I suddenly felt the weight of adulthood. I feel that by 25 your supposed to have a rough game plan. Sure, not have everything in place, but at least have a plan. I’m trying to work hard now to set myself up for the future, but it feels very much like an uphill battle at the moment, and often wake up with that “Oh here we go again feeling”. Not really the best way to start the day, eh?

I sat down last week, and had a good long think. Something had to change, as I just felt like I was burning out. I knew I had to start planning better, being more efficient with my time, and prioritising things that mattered, over quick wins. But I found it was almost like a pyramid, and for me to be efficient throughout the day, I had to be in that positive mind-set from the get go in the morning. Apparently I’m not alone either, 89% of us Brits claim their morning sets the tone for the rest of the day.

I never eat breakfast in the morning. I was about to write I don’t have time, but that’s just an excuse really. I could have time, I just choose to spend more time in bed (usually scrolling on Instagram. Oh come on, don’t pretend you don’t either). I’ve recently partnered with belVita in their campaign to bring Good Mornings to us Britain’s, as naturally it’s a good fit right now. Together we decided it was super important to actually take time in the morning to prepare for the day. Rather than get up in a hurry to catch the train, get up earlier, and sit down, relax and mentally prepare.

So this week I found myself setting my alarm a whole hour earlier. Yes, a whole hour. I wanted to actually be able to sit down, breath, collect my thoughts, make notes on what I wanted to focus on, and eat some breakfast. I started by having a nice hot shower with some of my favourite products, especially body wash with mint in it, as it sort of wakes you up with a zing. Then I made myself a cup of coffee, and prepared my breakfast. Some days, I had eggs and toast but on other days when I felt a little more rushed I had something lighter like belVita. But the main thing was that I made time to sit down and eat breakfast. It doesn’t matter if it’s fancy or not, the important component is making time for a good start to the day.

The Good Morning campaign conducted a study using quantitative, qualitative and academic research into the power of a good morning, by Dr Farrimond, the scientist behind the study. He said “Even though they might not come as frequently as we might like, all of us like to have great mornings, and we have always been told that breakfast sets us up well for the day.”

I was keen to find out whether this is true and, if it is, why breakfast seems to be so good for so many people. New scientific research, funded by belVita Breakfast, gives us the most up-to-date look at British people’s breakfasting and gives fascinating insights on just how incredibly powerful breakfast can be in helping us have a good morning and a great day.”

He went on to find that eating breakfast helps to increase productivity at work and enhances your ability to learn new things. I found that this week, I too had a better outlook at work. Rather than still being half as sleep when I arrived in the office, I was already awake and energised, and could sit down at my desk and actually be ready to start the day.

I found that even if I woke up in a bad mood and the day starts off badly, by forcing myself out of bed that bit earlier to give me some breathing room, so I can sit down, eat something, have some coffee and have a moment to myself, then I do genuinely feel better for the rest of the day. I’ve found that now my days are so packed (I now run three businesses) that I rarely get time to myself, so having those moments in the morning is essential.

If you've been feeling the pressure this January to set goals, resolutions and make plans, I really recommend starting your day with some me time at breakfast. Even if you don't give up your Instagram scrolling, at least do it over something filling.

We all want to have a good, productive day, but if you haven't been lately, please don't beat yourself up about it. We all go through lows, and troughs in our lives. Just keep going, keep trying, and that's all you can ask of yourself.

This post was sponsored by belVita. However all photos, words and views are my own.

  1. I'm so bad for not having breakfast! But I've started making smoothies for breakfast and it's made me so much perkier in the mornings!
